Five Days Before Christmas
Thankfully, entertainment lawyers, or at least the one I made an appointment with, offered free consultations. The drive to Lancaster was just over half an hour, so I made arrangements for my next day off to drop Cooper at the university before borrowing his car.
He knew full well of my plans and appreciated me taking the reins on it, as he had to get his book draft to his editor before Christmas if he planned to have any time to enjoy himself over the holidays. The traffic thickened as I drove into the city, but I had no trouble locating the office of Martin Lucas, Entertainment Lawyer, situated in a tall brick building right at the city center.
I looked up at the towering building, sucking in a breath. If I did decide to retain this lawyer, he most certainly wouldnât be cheap.
My appointment was at nine twenty-five. I didnât know if that meant it would be a five-minute consultation or a thirty-five-minute one.
I took the elevator to the eighteenth floor, looking over my notes one more time. I was generally a competent notetaker. Research for Cooperâs mystery novels had taught me that the memory was a fallible thing and you could never have too many notes.
I had the elevator to myself for a couple of floors, but then men in dark suits boarded and stepped off again, all before I reached my floor. I looked down at my red turtleneck, jeans, and knee-high boots, wondering if my outfit was a bit too casual for a lawyer visit.
But then the elevator dinged, taking my attention. I took one more deep breath, stepped off, and strode toward the office of Martin Lucas LL.M.
His office was well marked with a gold nameplate, and when I opened the door, it led me into a cozy reception area with a loveseat and an armchair, as well as a large mahogany desk where a receptionist sat.
I walked straight for the receptionist, but she wore a headset and nodded down at her desk as though she had someone on the line. I didnât interrupt, and after a few seconds, she said, âRight. And Iâll get back to you with that before Tuesday.â
She didnât say goodbye, so I wasnât sure she was done, even when she looked up at me and said, âYes?â
âOh!â I said after a lot of silent staring. âI have an appointment with Mr. Lucas at nine twenty-five?â Counselor Lucas? Or just Mr. Lucas?
Whatever the case, the lady didnât correct me. She had to be in her late fifties, but her dyed strawberry-blonde bob would have suited someone younger. She glanced at her computer screen and then back at me. âSure. Take a seat.â She motioned to the loveseat. âMr. Lucas will be with you shortly.â
Right. Mr. Lucas. I thanked her and sat on the edge of the loveseat, tapping my toes. Iâd never met with a lawyer before, and suddenly, I felt out of my depth. This was Cooperâs battle, after all.
